Good news: we finally know when we’ll get to try out the PlayStation VR2, and see how Sony has improved in the virtual reality department! Bad news though: it’s going to cost even more than a brand new PS5, if you can believe it. Unless you’re pretty well off, it’s looking more and more like you’re going to have to be satisfied with “just” a PS5.
How Much Money Are You Willing to Spend?
PlayStation.Blog has finally given us release details for their upcoming virtual reality console (and successor to the PlayStation VR1): the PlayStation VR2. Apparently, the console will officially launch next year on February 22, 2023. Each box set will include the headset, plus a pair of Sense controllers, and stereo headphones to further immerse you into the gameplay. One box set even comes with Horizon Call of the Mountain bundled in. You can even get a Sense controller charging station, but they’re selling that separately. Since it costs you extra, you might not want to get it unless you want to free up the console’s USB ports.
Speaking of costs though, PlayStation.Blog also reveals the prices for the PlayStation VR2, and it’s a doozy. Apparently, the bare console by itself will cost a grand total of $549.99 USD. No, you’re not seeing things. That’s seriously how much Sony decided their virtual reality console will cost. For comparison: that’s the same retail price as a base model of the PlayStation 5 with the built-in Blu-ray drive bundled together with Horizon Forbidden West. Honestly, it’s an insane price for what’s essentially a plug-in module for the PS5. That’s right, you need a PS5 just to even be able to play the PS VR2. You basically have to spend at least $950 (if you get the digital-only version of the PS5) just to play the PS VR2. Long story short: prepare to take a major hit to your wallet here if want this VR console.
