Bittersweet news today for fans of Yellowstone. It looks like we finally have a return date for the final episodes of the series. The second half of the long-awaited final season will air in November 2024. While it is good news for fans to finally have a date, a full year away is likely not what they expected. In addition to the return date for the flagship series, Paramount announced two more spinoff series for the franchise. The series will be titled 1944 and 2024 respectively. Yellowstone has been an absolute hit for Paramount, so it’s no surprise to see it continue in various ways. It’s a good bet, these will not be the last spinoff series that are announced. Paramount definitely is all-in on Taylor Sheridan has his numerous series.
THE END OF YELLOWSTONE
It was originally announced back in May that the hit series Yellowstone would end at the conclusion of Season 5. Prior to that announcement, Paramount had already made the decision to split the season into two parts. The first half of the season aired from November 2022 through January 2023. It had originally been expected for the series to return that Summer, however, due to multiple issues, that did not happen.
One main issue that impacted the conclusion of Season 5 was the exit of series star Kevin Costner. The unexpected exit by Costner seemingly pushed Paramount to end the series with the second half of the season, which was not originally intended. Also, the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike has prevented the series from returning to production. If there is any silver lining to the long wait until November 2024, is that it gives Sheridan adequate time to provide a fitting conclusion to the series.
YELLOWSTONE LIVES ON IN SPINOFFS
While the flagship series is ending in 2024, there is no shortage of Yellowstone stories ahead. There are at least now three spinoffs for fans to expect to see hit their TV screens. The prequel series, 1923, which aired its first season beginning in December 2022, is still expected to return for a second season at an unknown date. That series stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren as the Dutton family faces the challenges of the early 20th century, including the rise of Western expansion, Prohibition, and the Great Depression. Now added to that, are the just announced 1944 and 2024. No plot details have been provided for either at this time. Though one can expect 1944 will continue the prequel stories of the Dutton family, this time set in 1944 against the backdrop of WWII.
Things could get a little more interesting with 2024. The 2024 setting will put the series’ timeframe in the same era as the conclusion of Yellowstone. It had been previously reported there was a desire to air a new series at the conclusion of the main Yellowstone series. There have also been reports that a new series could star actor Matthew McConaughey. If those reports are true, it seems that 2024 might be that series. Given the contemporary setting, fans will certainly be anxious to find out if characters from Yellowstone might crossover into this new series.
There had also been a previously announced spinoff series Yellowstone: 6666. This series was set to feature the 6666 ranch that was introduced in Season 4. However, there has been little reported on the series, and one has to wonder if 2024 is the evolution or replacement of that series. Whether 6666 still happens or not, there is certainly no shortage of content headed our way in Yellowstone-Verse.
