According to a new report from Deadline, the hit TV series, Yellowstone may be ending sooner than anyone expected. It is reported that series co-creator and showrunner, Taylor Sheridan, and Paramount are planning to end the show in its current form. This is certainly unexpected and troubling news for fans of the neo-Western drama. However, the report also indicates they are looking to extend the franchise with a new show. One that stars Matthew McConaughey in the lead role.

TROUBLE ON THE RANCH

It is believed that the driving force behind the cancellation of the series is an issue with shooting schedules with Kevin Costner. Deadline reports, through sources, that Costner only wanted to shoot for 50 days for part one of season 5. For part two, the actor only wanted to shoot for one week. This limited scheduling has apparently led to frustration on the part of Sheridan and other cast members. Deadline has reported that Paramount Network had rejected Costner’s latest proposal and is instead moving on with a new show.

When asked for comment by Deadline, Paramount Network had this to say. “We have no news to report. Kevin Costner is a big part of Yellowstone and we hope that’s the case for a long time to come. Thanks to the brilliant mind of Taylor Sheridan, we are always working on franchise expansions of this incredible world he has built. Matthew McConaughey is a phenomenal talent with whom we’d love to partner,”

It is unknown when the series will but it is possible it could end with the second half of season 5, which is due to air this summer. As far as the Matthew McConaughey-led series, not much is known, including where the series will take place. But it does appear from the report, negotiations to land the star are in progress. The report also states that some stars from the current show would make the transition to the new series. Which will at least be a small consolation for fans.

YELLOWSTONE CONTINUES ON

Time will tell if this ultimately spells the end of the current Yellowstone series. It is certainly possible that both parties come to some sort of agreement to keep the show running. If however, this is the end of the flagship series of Yellowstone, there is still plenty of Yellowstone and Taylor Sheridan content for audiences.

The current prequel series, 1923 is currently in its first season, with season two already confirmed. This series stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren and focus on the generation of Duttons following the 1883 series. The previously announced spin-off series 6666, set at the Four Sixes Ranch, is also still on the table. This particular spin-off was seemingly further set up with the events of season 5 of Yellowstone. Outside of Yellowstone, Sheridan has the series Bass Reeves in production. There are also the standalone series’, Tulsa King which just completed its first season, and Mayor of Kingstown which is in its second.

As more information is reported, we will be sure to share it.
