After months of speculation, it has been made official, Yellowstone will come to an end at the conclusion of Season 5. The first half of Season 5 aired back in 2022 and the second half will conclude in November 2023. The reality of the flagship Yellowstone series ending has long been rumored due to reports of conflicts with series star Kevin Costner. With the news though, fans finally have clarity on the future of the series. While the ending of Yellowstone will leave many disappointed, there is a silver lining to the news. The Dutton family drama will continue in an announced sequel series set to premiere in December.

YELLOWSTONE WILL CONTINUE

Conflicts with Costner and his availability to continue with Yellowstone had been reported for quite some time. One of the main reasons behind the issues reportedly stems from his desire to focus on his own two-part Western film, Horizon. This led to Costner wishing to reduce his shooting schedule and caused issues with series creator Taylor Sheridan.

The new sequel series has been given a straight-to-series order from Paramount. It will debut on Paramount Network and be available to stream on Paramount+. This is a win for Paramount from a business perspective, as Yellowstone is currently on the rival streaming service, Peacock. The series does not currently have a name but will have Yellowstone in the title. Casting for the sequel has not been officially announced, but it has been long reported that Matthew McConaughey has been in talks to star. It is also unknown who from the current Yellowstone series may join the sequel, but a statement from David Glasser, CEO of 101 Studios, indicates the series will pick up where the previous series left off.

“…the Dutton story continues, picking up where Yellowstone leaves off in another epic tale. We are thrilled to bring this new journey to audiences around the world.”

Chris McCarthy, President and CEO of Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios also released a statement on the news.

Yellowstone has been the cornerstone on which we have launched an entire universe of global hits — from 1883 to Tulsa King, and I am confident our Yellowstone sequel will be another big hit, thanks to the brilliant creative mind of Taylor Sheridan and our incredible casts who bring these shows to life,”

YELLOWSTONE UNIVERSE STILL GROWING

The announced sequel is just one of the many Yellowstone-verse shows current prequel series, 1923 has completed its first season, with season two already confirmed. The previously announced spin-off series 6666, set at the Four Sixes Ranch, is also still on the table. 6666 was seemingly set up with the events of Season 5 of Yellowstone and will likely be further explored in the second half. Sheridan is also working on a series 1883 spinoff series, focused on Bass Reeves.
