Spy x Family Ch. 92 features Anya Forger going up against her most dreaded enemy once more: tests. This time though, this particular test may make or break her Eden Academy experience. Specifically, because failure on this test will earn Anya yet another Tonitrus Bolt, and thus bring her one step closer to expulsion.

Amazingly, something that’s as theoretically plot-significant as this chapter is still fluff.

Spy x Family Ch. 92 (known officially as Mission 92)  is the latest chapter of the manga by Tatsuya Endo (Blade of the Moon PrincessTISTA). This chapter technically continues the storyline of the previous chapter, but only in the sense that now the Authens play a major part rather than a minor one.

Casey Loe returns as the translator for Spy x Family Ch. 92, with Rina Mapa also returning as the letterer. Shueisha originally published this manga in Japan under their Jump Comics+ imprint in the magazine Shōnen Jump+. Viz Media is the company publishing this manga in English in the NA region.

Where to Read

Spy x Family Ch. 92 made its online debut on December 24, 2023 (just a day before Christmas, coincidentally). You can read this chapter entirely for free on Shonen Jump on Viz Media. Ch. 92 will remain free for 2 chapter releases after it. Upon the release of the third chapter after it, Ch. 92 will go into the Shonen Jump vault. Once there, you will have to pay a subscription fee to read it and all previous chapters. Admittedly, the fee is only $2.99 per month, so it’s not that big a hit to your wallet. All the same, if you’re short on cash, then you might want to hurry up and read Ch. 92 for free before you can’t anymore.

Anime Adaptation Details

As a side note: Spy x Family now has an anime adaptation that premiered on April 9, 2022. In fact, season 2 just recently premiered on October 7, 2023 and even more recently ended on December 23, 2023. You can watch all episodes on either Crunchyroll or Hulu. Note, though, that only Crunchyroll has any of the dubs. So if you like watching the English dub for some reason, then you have to watch the anime on Crunchyroll.

Spy x Family Ch. 92: Plot Summary

Basically this, but in education form.

Spy x Family Ch. 92 begins with an announcement from Eden Academy to all students: the term finals will be next Thursday and Friday. Understandably, everyone is incredibly stressed out by this. However, Anya has even more reason to be stressed. After all, she already has two Tonitrus Bolts, and you can only get eight before the Academy expels you. Thus, Loid once more tries to tutor Anya…but fails to do anything but make Anya’s head steam instead.

Fortunately, it’s Sigmund Authen to the rescue! As it turns out, he’s very knowledgeable in the sole subject Anya does well in: classical language. He takes over tutoring Anya when the Forgers come over for a visit. He even manages to make studying fun for Anya in a way reminiscent of the good teachers, allowing her to retain all the knowledge that she wouldn’t otherwise. We even get a brief look into Sigmund himself when he hugs Anya lovingly after she hits him with her childish cuteness. It makes you wonder just what kind of a past for Sigmund to react that way.

But back to Anya, the study sessions with Sigmund over the week results in Anya gaining “Koala Power” to replace her failed “Chihuahua Power”. Trust me: the latter makes sense in context to longtime Spy x Family fans. Anya arrives at the finals feeling ready for anything. She even shows up with stubble on her face for effect, drawn with permanent marker that she found to her shock wouldn’t wash off. Thus, she takes the finals in that condition (much to Damian’s annoyance). The scene then cuts to five days later…and that’s it for Ch. 92. We’ll just have to find out if Anya avoids getting a Tonitrus Bolt in the next chapter of Spy x Family.

Here’s where the Chihuahua Power joke came from.

The best part of Spy x Family Ch. 92 is definitely the story. As always, Tatsuya Endo shows that he’s a master of slice of life comedy and making a small child feel like a small child. When Anya is hilariously fascinated by her own long string of snot, you can tell that this is not a child who will be earning any Stellas for testwork anytime soon. The lessons in classical language that Sigmund gives to Anya only adds to the slice of life comedy. With Anya getting it hilariously wrong in places, Sigmund manages to turn the failure into fun for Anya. I am definitely getting Ms. Frizzle vibes from Sigmund, albeit with much less Magic School Bus-ing.

And yet, in between the slice of life comedy, you get a moment in Spy x Family Ch. 92 where something…didn’t seem quite right. That odd expression Sigmund made right before he gave that hug to Anya. It really does make you wonder if Sigmund did something terrible in his past that he wishes to forget and atone for? Alas, we will just have to wait for Tatsuya Endo to reveal that to us…eventually.

Spy x Family Ch. 92: The Bad

My reaction to anyone who thinks slice of life is boring.

To be honest, the only complaint I can make about Spy x Family Ch. 92 is one that I don’t agree with. If you’re a fan of action and drama, then this chapter isn’t for you. You might want a manga with more of that like The Ancient Magus’ Bride. Trust me, despite its name, that manga has plenty of both.
