Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (2017) had the honor of being the best-selling Resident Evil video game in the entire history of this survival horror franchise. “Had” being the operative word here. Now that honor goes to another slightly more recent Resident Evil game. Which one is it, you might ask? Well, did you know that Resident Evil 2 had a remake for modern consoles in 2019?

Resident Evil 2 Remake: Details

Resident Evil 2 (2019) key visual.
As it turns out, all Resident Evil fans want is a better version of the classics.

Capcom has just updated their list of Platinum Titles on their official website under Corporate/Investor Relations. Just for some context: this list is for any game of Capcom’s that managed to reach that magical one million units sold mark. Both of the aforementioned Resident Evil games reached that mark long ago. However, this update reveals a bit more on the exact number of millions of units sold for both Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and the remake of Resident Evil 2.

See, according to Capcom’s updated list: Resident Evil 2 (2019) has now officially reached 12.6 million units sold. In contrast, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard “only” has 12.4 million units sold. Thus, with a margin of just 200,000 units, the remake to the legendary 1998 survival horror classic has shoved aside the more modern interpretation of this horror game series. Now, Resident Evil 2 (2019) has the honor of being the best-selling Resident Evil game in all of history. Can anyone say: “Take that, modernity!”?

Capcom Platinum Titles List: The Top 3

Amazingly, this is only good enough for third place.

It gets even better though. With this new ranking, Resident Evil 2 (2019) is now the third best-selling Capcom video game of all time. Which are the other two, you might ask? Well, there’s Monster Hunter Rise in second place at 13.2 million units sold.

Apparently, epic fantasy is better than survival horror. It’s hard to argue with that given this trailer.

As for which game is in first place? Well, that honor goes to Monster Hunter: World. Yes, despite this game being older than Monster Hunter Rise, it still beats its predecessor in sales numbers. And by a huge number too, what with Monster Hunter: World seeing 19 million units sold. For the record: that’s 6.4 million units more than Resident Evil 2 (2019). Thus, Leon and Claire are going to have to work a bit harder to beat Monster Hunter.

The monster ecosystem simulator we’ve always wanted.
