You would think that because How Do You Live? will be Hayao Miyazaki’s final anime film masterpiece that Studio Ghibli would want to promote the heck out of it. Except, that’s not the case here. It seems that Miyazaki wants to release said final masterpiece without any hint of fanfare. Why? Well, let’s find out, shall we?

How Do You Live?: Details?

Anyone care to guess what this is all about?

The Hollywood Reporter has just revealed some very interesting information about the upcoming How Do You Live? anime film from Studio Ghibli (Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, Spirited Away). According to them, Hayao Miyazaki’s final masterpiece will see a release without any promotion. No, really. None at all. No trailer, no key visual, and not even the slightest hint of marketing will accompany this “fantastical” anime film’s release. All we have is a pair of mysterious teaser posters that were released quite some time ago and give absolutely no hint as to what this anime film is about.

No, seriously. What’s going on here?

So why all this secrecy around How Do You Live?? Well, Studio Ghibli doesn’t seem interested in telling us that either. All we have is a semi-joking explanation from Studio Ghibli co-founder and former president Toshio Suzuki, who aside from saying that Studio Ghibli will release nothing more until the anime film‘s release in theaters, has this to say:

As part of company operations, over the years Ghibli has wanted people to come see the movies we’ve made. So we’ve thought about that and done a lot of different things for that purpose — but this time we were like, ‘Eh, we don’t need to do that.’ Doing the same thing you’ve done before, over and over, you get tired of it. So we wanted to do something different.

It’s not much of an explanation, but it’s the best one we got so far. I guess we’ll just have to wait for How Do You Live? to come out in Japanese theaters on July 14, 2023. Tune back into THS later on that date to find that out when we do.
