It looks like China is trying to get into the anime film (or at least animated film) business once more with New Gods: Yang Jian. If you want to see how this second film in the New Gods series goes, then don’t worry. GKIDS has got your back.
Even Newer Gods Inbound?
GKIDS is proud to announce that they have acquired the NA distribution rights to New Gods: Yang Jian. This latest animated film from Light Chaser Animation will apparently make its theatrical debut in the US sometime in early 2023.

The film drips with style, bringing a unique and action-packed spin on a classic Chinese story. We can’t wait to share it with American audiences early next year.”

Unfortunately, the release date doesn’t get any more specific than that. We’ll just have to wait until later for GKIDS to clarify that release date. Tune back into THS to find out when that will be.
New Gods: Yang Jian ~ Details
New Gods: Yang Jian is the sequel to the Chinese 3D animated fantasy film New Gods: Nezha Reborn, thus officially making this a film series. Light Chaser Animation Studios (White Snake, Green Snake) remains the animation studio behind this animated film, as they were for New Gods: Nezha Reborn. Ji Zhao is the director, with Xi Lu producing, and Chuan Mu acting as a screenwriter. The film stars the voice talents of Kai Wang, Guanlin Ji, Lihong Li, and Lanling Li. Lastly, as mentioned before, GKIDS is licensing this animated film for its NA release.
As for what New Gods: Yang Jian is about? Well, GKIDS has been kind enough to provide an official synopsis for us today. Check it out below:
“Thirteen years after Yang Jian (known to some as Erlang Shen) imprisoned his sister beneath a mountain, the once powerful god now scrapes by as a penniless bounty hunter. When a mysterious woman hires him for a new job, Yang Jian soon finds himself chasing down a familiar figure. He must stop Chenxiang, his long-lost nephew, who is in search of the magical lotus lantern that will free his mother, even if it will bring catastrophe. As Yang Jian confronts the actions of his past, he must face a host of dangerous vigilantes seeking the same treasure with the power to alter the balance of their worlds.
