Kate Kane, the main character of Batwoman, will be replaced by an entirely new character for its 2nd season.

Kate Kane, staring at her impending bus.
Kate Kane, soon to be bus-bound.

Basics

On June 2, 2020; The CW reveals that they’ll be putting Kate Kane on a bus for the 2nd season of Batwoman. Instead, a new character will be replacing her lead role in the show. No picture of the character has been revealed so far. In fact, very little is known about this new character, save for the name “Ryan Wilder” and a personality description that is as follows:

She’s likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the batsuit before her. With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.

The name “Ryan Wilder” is significant though. ScreenRant notes that the name does not come from anywhere in the DC comic book universe. So we have 2 possibilities: either “Ryan Wilder” is a placeholder for another name, or they’re planning on introducing an entirely original character to replace Kate Kane. We’re going to have to see what comes of this when The CW reveals more info about this.

Opinion

To be fair, Ruby Rose‘s completely unforeseen departure from Batwoman has to be throwing everyone in a tizzy. Coming up with a new lead fit to replace Kate Kane must be nightmarish for the production team, especially given the complex story they’ve already woven around the character in season 1. One can only imagine the kind of bus Kate Kane will be put on to explain her unexpected departure.

A strange bus for Kate Kane.
This would be a strange bus for Kate Kane to get on indeed.

I really do want to know how they’ll put Kate Kane on that bus though. Given that it’s highly unlikely that Ruby Rose will ever return to Batwoman, I believe it’s almost certain that they’ll kill her offscreen. Or perhaps they’ll even throw us for a loop by showing her death onscreen to compensate. Only time will tell when The CW gives us more details.

Hopefully, not Kate Kane's bus.
Hopefully, Kate Kane has the sense to not get on this bus either.

Conclusion

Kate Kane is getting replaced by an entirely new character. We know why, but we just don’t know who. Yet. Hopefully, The CW will be clearing this up soon.
