Pixar will return to the Cannes Film Festival with the world premiere of Elemental. The studio’s latest animated feature will officially serve as the festival’s closing film on May 27. It will screen Out of Competition.

Elemental also marks Pixar’s fourth feature presentation at Cannes. The animation studio previously unveiled Up, Inside Out, and Soul at the festival.

Thierry Frémaux, Cannes’ general delegate, discussed welcoming Pixar back to the festival.

“Pixar Animation Studios, with Up, directed by Pete Docter, made Cannes history by opening the 62nd edition of the Festival in 2009. It was a wonderful event! This is another great opportunity, to present the amazing Elemental, for the “Last Screening” of this 76th Festival de Cannes, and to think about our lives in such a powerful way,” Fremaux said.

Pixar’s chief creative officer Pete Docter, director Peter Sohn, and producer Denise Ream will attend the event, as well as members of the film’s voice cast.

The original animated feature introduces Element City, where fire-, water-, land- and air-residents live together. The story follows Ember, a tough, quick-witted and fiery young woman, whose friendship with a fun, sappy, go-with-the-flow guy named Wade challenges her beliefs about the world they live in.

Elemental joins the 50+ films slated for Cannes. The lineup also includes high-profile titles like Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

The Cannes Film Festival runs from May 16 to 27, and Elemental premieres theatrically shortly afterward on June 16.
