Friday the 13th‘s film rights are a nightmare. Not the A Nightmare on Elm Street kind, New Line just refuses to make a new film in that franchise. The rights to Friday the 13th come down to Sean S. Cunningham (director of the original film and franchise steward) and Victor Miller (writer of the original). Each one stakes a claim to the franchise and the characters, and it’s been an ugly battle of protracted lawsuits and legal fighting. Victor Miller owns the original screenplay rights, however, Cunningham owns the rights to the adult version of Jason Voorhees. If there’s any new movie coming, they both have to come to an agreement on it. There’ve been plenty of moments where it looked like they’ll come to an agreement, but alas, we’re here still.

According to Bloody Disgusting’s The Boo Crew Podcast, they spoke with horror producer Roy Lee, who’s done films like The Ring, Poltergeist, Blair Witch, It, and Barbarian. In their interview, he stated:

“That one is something that I would love to talk about. You may be hearing something by year’s end… on that front.”

Roy Lee was involved with a prospective iteration of the Friday the 13th franchise back in 2018 with Vertigo Entertainment. If the two sides can’t come to an agreement, we might have a strange film that either doesn’t use adult Jason or doesn’t have his backstory or Camp Crystal Lake at all.

Something could be coming for Jason and Friday the 13th, let’s all hope that it’s good news.
