Greetings Fanatics, and welcome to JJ’s Fan Feature. So, Star Wars fans are nothing if not passionate. We writers here at That Hashtag Show are fans too, and just as passionate. Our goal is to channel that passion into our writing. An unfortunate side effect of doing so is that sometimes we let our own, personal feelings seep into certain works when we should remain objective. Star Wars Fanatics member Dave Thompson recently reminded me of that. He noted that, despite my stated goal of setting personal feelings aside with my latest Rian Johnson piece, I nevertheless let my bias against The Last Jedi permeate the article. In hindsight, Dave wasn’t wrong; I’ll own that. Therefore, I offer this for this week’s Fan Feature: The top five things I liked/enjoyed about Star Wars: Episode VIII.
The Opening Bombing Sequence of Star Wars: Episode VIII
While others have criticized the science of the sequence, I nonetheless enjoyed it thoroughly. Being a Word War II aviation buff as I am, I loved the obvious nod to the heavy bombers of the war’s European Theater. The scene was visually stunning, and packed full of drama. Ultimately Poe’s insubordination did matter; had the dreadnaught still been functional, it likely would have decimated the fleeing Resistance fleet long before they could launch escape pods to Crait. And besides, who doesn’t love a space battle?
The Last Jedi is a very entertaining movie, if I don’t think about the previous 7 movies because it really ignores much of the lore. The problem is it’s called Episode 8 so it has to fit with the narrative of the previous 7 movies. So I freely admit it’s an entertaining standalone movie, but not a good Saga movie.
Personally I’ve enjoyed all the new installments. Admittedly the sequel storyline can feel compressed at times I don’t necessarily feel it ignores the lore. In its day even Empire was vilified by many. As fans many are so attached to Luke Skywalker it’s hard to handle him in a supporting role. His moving from the central protagonist to experienced mentor is actually very much in holding with the Star Wars lore. I try to approach each new movie with the following mentality. This will be entirely new, and I understand that may not match what I imagined. Agree with any part of what I’ve said or not I would ask one thing. The people creating the new movies deserve to be treated in a respectful manner, weather you like the new story arc or not. P.S. I love what the character Rose Tico has brought to the Finn character.
Complete and utter failure. There is no gravity in space. The bombing scene is ridiculous. Every scene that shows gravity in space is just ignorant.
@Mark Payne, space is filled with large object which resonate with gravitational effects. An enormous space ship with internal gravity plate flooring would likely generate gravity that in this case could draw a free falling object to it. Scientifically speaking, it works in theory.
I’ve heard arguments about, “there’s never been an issue with ship gas before” when we see the fuel lines attached to the X and Y wings in “A New Hope.” Rebels talks about fuel cells all the time. There is plenty story that justify what plays out in episode VIII.
I feel like there was a major line missed during the scene of DJ explaining to Rose and Finn about the arms dealer who owns the ship. Obi Wan tells Luke that the truths we cling to depend on our own point of view. The only way to really achieve peace in the Galaxy is to afford everyone their own perception and not impeed on another’s point of view.
This gets me truly excited to see “To Balance the Force” (my personal favorite title here… The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, To Balance the Force) if they can show us how we just need to live our own life and do our best not to intrude on others because of their views or perceptions so that we can maintain a balance that has not been seen before.
Your eyes can deceive you, don’t trust them. Reach out with your feelings, you’ll know it to be true.
