WATCH TO WATCH: THEATRE RELEASES

GODZILLA MINUS ONE

Written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, Godzilla Minus One is the 37th film in the Godzilla franchise. The film takes us back to 1945 and post-WWII Japan dealing with the emergence of Godzilla. Our THS review called it one of the best Godzilla films ever, praising its visual effects and also the human element featured.

Godzilla Minus One places far more of a focus on the human element. I’d go as far as to say if there wasn’t Godzilla in this movie, it would still be a powerful look into post-war Japan. The film has one of the best ensemble casts of the year,

Hunter Bolding, That Hashtag Show

Release Date: December 1, 2023 (Nationwide)

What’s it about?: Post-war Japan is at its lowest point when a new crisis emerges in the form of a giant monster, baptized in the horrific power of the atomic bomb.

EILEEN

Eileen follows a young secretary (Thomasin McKenzie) who becomes enchanted by the glamorous new counselor (Anne Hathaway) at the prison where she works. Our THS review found the film to be an excellent noir thriller, making use of all of the expected tropes of the genre to great effect.

Like all the best thrillers, Eileen manages to throw a solid number of twists, turns, and surprises our way. (A line delivered by Hathaway at the film’s climax made me gasp out loud.) The film knows the noir tropes of its roots, and balances playing them up and subverting them to put a unique twist on the story. In some ways, Eileen is just what you expect. In others, it diverts to a different path. I felt drawn up and taken along for a ride with this one, and I loved that it kept me guessing what would happen next.
