The new reunion tour for Pantera kicked off their first US tour date last night in Panama City, Florida for the Thunder Beach Motorcycle Rally. The last time the band played live in the US was 22 years ago in July 2001 when they played at the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma, Washington.
The setlist they played featured plenty of Pantera classics and one new track that they haven’t busted out on their comeback tour yet, “Suicide Note Pt. II”.
Their current lineup includes Phil Anselmo, Rex Brown, Zakk Wylde, and Charlie Benante. They’ve headlined some major festivals, but this was their first time performing on US soil. They’re also embarking as openers for Metallica‘s upcoming M72 World Tour in North America for 2023 and 2024.
The reunion is endorsed by the estates of the band’s founders drummer Vinnie Paul and “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott. Vinnie Paul and Phil Anselmo were not on speaking terms at the time of Paul’s untimely death in 2018. Dimebag Darrell was killed onstage while performing with DAMAGEPLAN in 2004.
