Am I the only one who didn’t expect the Rihanna comeback to take the form of a Smurfs movie? Honestly, it sounds a bit like a month-late April Fools prank, but it’s true.

The artist herself appeared on stage at CinemaCon to announce the news. Rihanna will officially voice Smurfette in an upcoming animated Smurfs movie from Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon. While on stage, Rihanna revealed she will also write and perform original music for the movie.

“On behalf of our studio and our creative partners at LAFIG, we couldn’t be more excited to have found our Smurfette in one of the most beloved stars in the world,” said Brian Robbins, President and CEO of Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon, and Ramsey Naito, President of Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation in a statement. “With Rihanna’s singular creative appeal and musical talents, there is an enormous opportunity to elevate the cultural touchstone of The Smurfs universe in a way that’s never been done before.”

The upcoming feature draws on the characters and works of Peyo. Chris Miller and Matt Landon co-direct the currently untitled film. In addition to acting and providing music, Rihanna also produces the project.

Currently, Paramount plans to release the film on February 14, 2025. Until then, check back to THS for more updates.
