Star Wars fans around the galaxy jumped for joy when Disney+ announced that the new Obi-Wan Kenobi series will start streaming on May 25th. Starring Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy promised us that “This will be the rematch of the century”. But like any Star Wars project, the details on this series have been locked up pretty tight. Well also just like any Star Wars project we see a lot of rumors out there as well; and one rumor that is making headway again is that actor Liam Neeson will be reprising his role as Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn.

Once again I will say before I go any further please take what you read about this rumor with a grain of salt. But according to Making of Star Wars, Jason Ward Liam Neeson will be in the new Obi-Wan Kenobi series. He spoke about this with Star Wars Santa on YouTube. After talking about how they would see Yoda in the series here is what Ward had to say:

“Well that’s my question about Qiu-Gon, as I know Qui-Gon is in it but I don’t know if he’s a voice-over or if he is a physical ghost,” He would also go on to say, “That’s a really big scoop I just dropped. I know he’s in it now. Like I know. I’ve been told.”

Of course, we don’t know who “Told” him but let’s be real with each other, it does make sense to have Qui-Gon appear in some way in this series. We know that Yoda sent Obi-Wan to train so he can complete his training for the key to immortality through the Force. And we also know when Yoda went for his training he spoke with Qiu-Gon so it would make sense to have Qui-Gon speak to Obi-Wan at some point.

How Will Qui-Gon Jinn Appear In The Obi-Wan Kenobi Series?

So the big question is if Qui-Gon returns how will we see him in the Obi-Wan series? Well, there are only really three answers, and those are Force Ghost, Flashbacks and Dreams, or a voice through the Force. As for returning as a Force ghost, this might be hard to explain. Especially after Star Wars: The Clone Wars – Season 6 Voices that revealed Qui-Gon could not achieve physical manifestation since he was unable to finish his training. You can see this in the clip below.

“I am a manifestation of the Force, a Force that consists of two parts. Living beings generate the living Force, which in turn powers the wellspring that is the cosmic Force.” So, because of Qui-Gon finding the key to immortality, we are able to have Force ghosts, but unfortunately, Qui-Gon is unable to appear as an image of himself because his training was incomplete. So, unless they come up with a way he can complete his training in the afterlife, the Force ghost option goes right out the window. He will just have to remain as a voice in the Force. Now I know people are going to say I’m wrong and will say we Qui-Gon’s Force Ghost in Season 3 of The Clone Wars.

Was That Qui-Gon’s Force Ghost On Mortis?

So this is where it gets fun in The Clone Wars. If you did not see season 6, then it would seem that we did see Qui-Gons Force Ghost in The Clone Wars Season 3 episodes Overlords and the Ghosts of Mortis. In these episodes, Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Ahsoka find themselves on planet Mortis, home to the Father, Daughter, and Son. There we see what appears to be a Force ghost of Qui-Gon speaking with Obi-Wan and then later on with Anakin. But if Qui-Gon didn’t complete his training how was this possible?

We learned very quickly that the Force is very strong on Mortis, and the rules of the Force don’t apply like everywhere else. Also, we learned that The Father, Daughter, and Son can manipulate the force like no other. We see this throughout these episodes, not only with the Qui-Gon Force Ghosts but with visions that Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Ahsoka had as well. All these visions, ghosts, and Force Ghosts that we saw on Mortis were used by the Father, Daughter, and Son to try to manipulate Anakin on his path to see if he was the chosen one. So unless Obi-Wan found a way for Qui-Gon to complete his training in the afterlife we won’t see him in his physical form as a Force Ghost.

So yes we will probably see Liam Neeson reprising his role as Qui-Gon Jinn. But more than likely it will be in the form of a vision, a flashback, or a voice through the Force. Again none of this has been confirmed by Disney+, but no matter what happens I am excited for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series heading our way in May.
