Nintendo fans eagerly await the release of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. However, you know who are also awaiting that release? Scalpers. Loads and loads of scalpers, all waiting in the woodwork to buy them up as soon as they become available in order to resell them at absurdly inflated prices. Sometimes hundreds of dollars above retail prices. It happened to the PS5 and Xbox Series S/X when they launched. Heck, it even happened to Nintendo themselves when they launched the Nintendo Switch back on March 3, 2017. It seems that no major video game console is safe from the shadow of scalpers, always circling around the latest hot thing to scalp.
Fortunately, it does look like Nintendo remember what happened to the Nintendo Switch, and are determined to not let the same thing happen to the Nintendo Switch 2. How else do you explain this delay in the console’s release?
Nintendo Switch 2: Release Details
IGN (via Japanese media company Nikkei as the original source) has just revealed that the Nintendo is delaying the release of their still-unnamed Nintendo Switch 2. Interestingly, in doing so, they also reveal what the new release date is. According to them: this successor to the Nintendo Switch has reportedly shifted its planned release date to sometime in March 2025. Technically, it’s more of a release window than a release date. However, it’s a pretty specific release window to look forward to.
So why the release date shift, you might ask? As I’ve explained in the first two introductory paragraphs: scalpers. Nikkei mentions that Nintendo is prioritizing “taking measures to prevent resale and securing initial stock of successor machines and a lineup of popular software at the time of release”. In order words: Nintendo wants to have a massive initial supply of Nintendo Switch 2s in order to overwhelm those scalpers. Let’s hope that will be enough, yeah?
Although there is other news about the Nintendo Switch 2. Nikkei does confirm that this Nintendo Switch successor will also be a hybrid handheld and home video game console. The only confirmed difference will be that this successor will have a bigger screen. Alas, that’s it as far as additional details so far.
