Bad Bunny has taken the worlds of music, wrestling, and movies by storm, but it looks like he won’t be taking on Spider-Man any time soon. Our friends at One Take News are reporting that Bad Bunny has exited the upcoming El Muerto film from Sony Pictures. The film was taken off Sony’s release calendar earlier this week and now this news puts the project in even more jeopardy. It’s unknown if Bad Bunny would remain on as an Executive Producer of the film.
Bad Bunny’s schedule is already full with appearances in WWE, touring, and other commitments. It would be difficult to fit filming a blockbuster superhero film into that schedule already, but without a release date or other details, it’s impossible. Also, Bad Bunny is the entire reason that El Muerto exists as a movie in the first place. The character is about as obscure as they come from Spider-Man comics.
El Muerto would be the first Marvel film to have a Latino lead. The character comes from a Spider-Man comic about an antihero named Juan Carlos Estrada Sanchez, the son of a luchador. He finds himself next in line to inherit the ancestral power and mantle of “El Muerto”.
The actual storyline that El Muerto comes from is quite silly. J. Jonah Jameson puts on a wrestling match for charity to try to unmask Spider-Man. El Muerto is about as low on the pole as you can get for a superhero, but here’s hoping they make it work for the movie.
El Muerto will be directed by Jonás Cuarón and written by Gareth Dunnet Alcocer.
There are several Spider-Man universe spin-off movies still in plans for Sony after this. There’s also another Spider-Man film dated for 2025. Kraven The Hunter releases in theaters on October 6th, 2023. Madame Web starring Sydney Sweeney and Dakota Johnson releases in theaters on February 16th, 2024.
