Despite its predecessor doing relatively ok at the box office, Spider-Man: Across The Spider-verse managed to not only exceed its predecessor. It managed to become the top movie this weekend despite some heavy competition.
Spins A Web Every Time At The Box Office
Comparatively, when Into The Spider-verse came out, Across the Spider-verse had more stiff competition. When the original came out, it saw a 1st place debut; but quickly plummeted to 4th place to Aquaman and Bumblebee. Even as another Transformers movie primes itself for release. Across The Spider-verse has a stronger footing than its predecessor. With this stronger footing; it may not lose as much of its box office power in the weeks to come.
As per Box Office Mojo, Across the Spider-verse debuted with $120.5M; which nearly triples the opening weekend of Into The Spiderverse‘s $35 Million opening weekend box office. Similar to 2018, the movie faces steep competition from a new Transformers movie in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. However, it’ll be interesting to see if Across the Spider-verse can maintain its top spot; or (realistically) if not, how much it falls at the box office. Considering Across the Spider-verse leaves on a cliffhanger; it would be good to see it succeed so we can see Sony complete the trilogy!
In our review of Across the Spider-verse, reviewer Hunter Bolding said:
Through it all, Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse is as close to a perfect sequel as you can get. It feels very much like The Empire Strikes Back in all the best ways. It’s dark, and dreary, but still retains that level of hope that you felt from the first film. This story retains what made that first film special, but blows it out of the water with an expansion of Spider-Man mythology and animation style.
The Boogeyman Fails To Spook At The Box Office
The Little Mermaid was not able to maintain a healthy lead from the Memorial Day long weekend box office; dropping by a whopping 57.5% down to $40.6 Million. The Boogeyman debuted against Across The Spider-Verse in 3rd place to a disappointing $12.3M domestically, $20 million worldwide; which on a $35 Million budget makes it quite a disappointment for Disney. In our review of the movie, reviewer Hunter Bolding said:
Through it all, The Boogeyman is one of the best examples of adaptation in the horror genre. It takes a simple premise about one of the most ancient and evil monsters that we all know, The Boogeyman. It tells an emotional story about grief and overcoming tragedy with some very creative jump-scares and tense scenes. Most importantly it makes you care about the characters and the emotions that they’re feeling. After watching this movie, you won’t be leaving any closet doors open for a while.
Rounding out the Top 5 was Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in the 4th place spot with $10.2 Million over the weekend; and Fast X in the 5th place spot with $9.2 Million.
As mentioned previously, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts opens this Friday; and we anticipate that it’ll give Across The Spider-verse some healthy competition at the box office.
