Move over, Sand Snakes. Indira Varma is teaming up with a new sisterhood.
Varma, known for roles in Game of Thrones and Obi-Wan, joins Emily Watson and Shirley Henderson in the upcoming Dune prequel series, The Sisterhood. Deadline reports Varma will play Empress Natalya, a formidable royal who united thousands of worlds in her marriage to Emperor Corrino.
The upcoming HBO Max show takes place 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides portrayed in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune film. It follows the Harkonnen Sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind and establish the fabled sect known as the Bene Gesserit. Dune: The Sisterhood adapts the novel Sisterhood of Dune by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson.
Diane Ademu-John serves as creator, writer, co-showrunner and executive producer on the series, with Alison Schapker co-showrunning and executive producing.
Varma’s previous roles include Ellaria Sand, leader of the deadly Sand Snakes, in HBO’s Game of Thrones; Tala Durith in the Disney+ Star Wars series Obi-Wan; Piety Breakspear in Carnival Row; and the voice of Lady Allura Vysoren in The Legend of Vox Machina. She’s also set to appear in the upcoming Apple TV+ series Extrapolations, as well as the next Mission: Impossible feature, Dead Reckoning Part One.
Dune: The Sisterhood does not have a release date yet for HBO Max. However, the film’s sequel plans to premiere in November 2023.
