Several years ago, Lucasfilm made a big announcement, that writer-director Rian Johnson would be developing his own Star Wars trilogy. Fast forward to 2022 and there has been no official news or status on that trilogy. Calling Rian Johnson a divisive topic amongst Star Wars fans would be an understatement. This could be, in part, why the news on anything regarding his involvement in Star Wars has been noticeably quiet. Thanks to the new article from Vanity Fair we might have the closest thing to an update on the Rian Johnson trilogy that we’ve had since the original announcement,

RIAN JOHNSON TRILOGY STATUS

In the Vanity Fair report, Lucasfilm President, Kathleen Kennedy indicates that the Rian Johnson trilogy is currently on the “back burner”. Though it is interesting to point out, that Kennedy did not state it was officially canceled.

That leaves the question of what’s happening with the Star Wars movies. We have a road map,” Kennedy says, although Lucasfilm’s big-screen return is unlikely to follow the same relentless cadence as before. A movie from Jojo Rabbit’s Taika Waititi and 1917 screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns will likely arrive first, with Rogue Squadron from Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins further off. Is it true that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige will produce a Star Wars film? “I would love to see what movie he might come up with,” Kennedy says. “But right now, no, there isn’t anything specifically.” And the trilogy from The Last Jedi’s Rian Johnson that was announced five years ago? Back-burnered. “Rian has been unbelievably busy with Knives Out and the deal that he made at Netflix for multiple movies.”

While it is true the director is quite busy with Knives Out, it appears that there is no spot in the current roadmap of TV or movies that has been carved out for a Rian Johnson trilogy. Further adding to the idea that this trilogy may never actually occur, was Kennedy’s statement in the article regarding trilogies being a thing of the past for Star Wars.

“I hesitate to use the word trilogies anymore because Star Wars is much more about persistent storytelling,” Kennedy says.
