The DC Universe is expanding on HBO Max. Variety reports the streamer wants to explore Aqualad’s story next.
Apparently, the live-action, one-hour dramedy series will draw on the content of the YA graphic novel “You Brought Me the Ocean” by Alex Sanchez and Jul Maroh. The series will explore the life of Jackson “Jake” Hyde, a gay teenager living in New Mexico. All his life, he has had a strange attraction to the water and yearns to escape his desert surroundings for the ocean. As he explores his abilities, including breathing under and controlling water, he also finds himself falling in love with his classmate, high school swim captain Kenny Liu.
Though no talent is currently attached to the project, it does have some star power already. Charlize Theron will executive produce the series under Denver & Delilah Films. A.J. Dix, Beth Kono, and Andrew Haas will also executive produce.
The Jake Hyde version of Aqualad first debuted in 2010 in the animated TV series Young Justice. Khary Payton voiced the character in the animated series. Jake Hyde’s arc on Young Justice revealed him to be the son of supervillain Black Manta. He eventually becomes the second Aquaman in DC canon.
No word yet on if You Brought Me The Ocean will hit the same plot points as Young Justice.
A different version of Aqualad, Gareth, recently appeared on the HBO Max series Titans. Drew Van Acker plays him.
