Keanu Reeves has his own comic book now in the form of BRZRKR from Boom! Studios. And he seems to be intent on mashing up a whole bunch of other films and even game plots in it.
To be fair, while Keanu Reeves is the principle writer for BRZRKR, he isn’t the only person working on it. Reeves is cowriting this comic book with veteran comic book writer Matt Kindt, who was responsible for Dept. H, Mind MGMT, Justice League of America, Spider-Man, Ninjak, and Rai. In addition, veteran comic book artist Ron Garney will be doing the artwork for the series. With his previous work on series like JLA, The Amazing Spider-Man, Silver Surfer, Hulk, Daredevil and Captain America; he’s a pretty good choice for turning the writing into comic book panels.
BRZRKR #1: The Spoiler-Free Plot Summary
If you were to ask me to summarize BRZRKR in a single sentence without giving away any spoilers, I would give you a single answer. Imagine John Wick crossed with Highlander, with a dose of Call of Duty for flavoring. Yeah, that basically sums up the entirety of this comic book.
The John Wick reference is pretty obvious in BRZRKR. If you put Keanu Reeves in any kind of action hero role, everyone’s going to compare him to John Wick. He’s just too iconic at this point. I mean, those a-holes killed his adorable puppy. They deserved to die. All of them. Well, there’s no puppy in this issue, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see one in the next issues.
As for Highlander, well, you’ll see it when you come to it. I was honestly hoping for a Highlander reference in BRZRKR, but it never came. Not even that iconic line:
As for Call of Duty, well, you noticed our unnamed BRZRKR‘s gear, right? With all the pouches, webbing, and other tacticool stuff? Not to mention the bullet holes in him. And blood. Lots of blood. Believe me, it read just like playing a Call of Duty game. I was honestly disappointed when no Ramirez reference materialized.
Conclusion
If you’re looking for an epic crossover between John Wick, Highlander, and Call of Duty; then you’ve come to the right comic book. BRZRKR is the comic book for those looking to scratch an action-thriller itch here. It’s even written mostly by Keanu Reeves and stars his likeness. What more do you want?
