Anyone excited for Gremlins 3? Well, you’re probably going to have to wait some time for it. Heck, the original writer for Gremlins has been waiting a long, long, long time for it. He apparently even wrote the script for it, but so far, no luck.
During a recent interview to promote The Christmas Chronicles 2, Chris Columbus decided to go off topic and talk about Gremlins. He apparently loved that movie, and would’ve loved to write for Gremlins 3. You know, if anyone had greenlit it. His exact words were:
I would love to do it. I wrote a script, so there is an existing script. We’re working out some rights issues right now, so we’re just trying to figure out when the best time to make that film would be. I would still do it the same way, I would do it as tangible puppets, not CGI. Maybe having, you know we had one stop-motion scene in the first Gremlins, but I don’t think I’d use much CGI in Gremlins 3.
Gremlins 3: Keeping Chris Columbus Hopeful Since 1990
So there you have it, folks. Sometime in between 1990 (when Gremlins 2 came out) and now in 2020, Chris Columbus managed to find time to write a complete script for Gremlins 3. So far though, it’s been for naught. It seems there are some issues about who owns Gremlins, and until those issues are solved, no one will greenlight Gremlins 3‘s production. Thus, the script that’s been gathering dust for the last 30 years will still continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
The good news is that Chris Columbus’ plans for Gremlins 3 involves very little in the way of CGI. His planned widespread use of puppets reminds me of Star Wars and those Jim Henson movies like The Dark Crystal. It sounds pretty refreshing to see a mostly puppet movie in this age of CGI.
In the end though, all these plans are theoretical until someone actually greenlights the production of Gremlins 3. There might be hope now that HBO Max is producing Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai. The only difference is that this is an animated series rather than a live-action one. I’ve got nothing against animation, mind you, but it feels like a big of a downgrade from the puppets. Let’s hope that series drums up enough hype for people to demand Gremlins 3.
Chris Columbus, original writer for Gremlins, reveals that he wrote the script for the third movie quite a while ago. Likely 30 years ago, really. Still no takers as of 2020 though. Perhaps one day, we’ll finally get to see a proper sequel to that most bloody of Christmas movies. That’s not The New Batch.
