Wes Ball’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes dominated the weekend box office with a strong showing.

Apes Were The Dominate Species At The Box Office

KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was tracking for a $54 million to $61 million opening, which we knew would’ve put it squarely in the first place spot, but the real surprise is that it was fairly close to its tracked amounts, with the movie making $56.5 million in the first place spot as per Box Office Mojo.

The movie is not only doing well on its own but is also doing well in the context of the franchise. It’s currently the second-highest debut for the franchise; behind Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and its $72.6 million debut.

Once again too, IMAX and other premium large format screens continue to do big business as 41% of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes‘ box office revenue came from the format.

Rest Of The Box Office

The Fall Guy fell to second place, with a 50.6% drop over last week. The movie earned $13.7 million. Universal has been pivoting its marketing efforts to highlight the film as more of a ‘Rom-Com’ to reduce the drop-off but unfortunately these efforts don’t seem to be resonating with the female demographic that the movie is targeting as the movie fails to find its audience.

The rest of the weekend remained the same as last week with Challengers keeping in third with $4.6 million. Tarot remained in fourth with $3.4 million. Finally, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire remained in fifth with $2.5 million.

Next Weekend’s Predictions

IF

Next weekend sees the release of the Paramount Pictures movie, IF. The Ryan Reynolds & John Krasinski movie is targeting a $38 million to $42 million opening. This does feel very ambitious for an original family-oriented movie considering that the movie doesn’t have a lot of pull in terms of being an existing IP. Whether families find Ryan Reynolds & John Krasinski to be a draw is also questionable.

While it’ll likely be a close one between IF and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes; the success of either is going to be dependent on the drop-off rate of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. This drop-off might not be so low as expected as the movie does appeal to multiple demographics and those demographics may be more interested in seeing Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes than they would IF.

As always we’ll find out next week!
