While the Star Wars sequel trilogy concluded with The Rise of Skywalker back in 2019, it seems that Lucasfilm still has big plans for Rey Skywalker. Specifically in the form of an upcoming Star Wars film starring her. It’s still so new that it doesn’t even have a title yet. However, now we know one thing about it: Kathleen Kennedy apparently has some very big plans for this upcoming film even after its debut. So big that she actually hopes that it will launch the “next chapter” of the entire franchise.
Rey Film: The Next Chapter of Star Wars?
GamesRadar+ has just released an interview they conducted with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy about the future of Star Wars. Specifically, this interview is about a pair of upcoming Star Wars films: the still-untitled Rey film and the even more untitled Force origin story film. According to Kennedy, the 2 films will be deeply connected with each other, with the Rey film looking towards the future even as the Force origin story film looks to the distant past.
As fascinating as that is though, that’s not the big news today. In the same interview, Kathleen Kennedy mentions that the Rey film will actually launch the “next chapter” chapter of Star Wars. In fact, you can read her exact quote on the subject below:
I think what’s always great about Star Wars is it’s a big galaxy, and we’re coming off what was a major war with the First Order. And now, Rey has made a promise to Luke and that’s really the core of where we’re going and what this story will be. And I think it offers just tremendous opportunity to introduce new characters and start with something fresh, because we culminated with what George [Lucas] was creating, and now we take all of that and move it to the next chapter.
Rey Film: Speculation
As you can see though, Kathleen Kennedy doesn’t mention what this “next chapter” will be. Will it be another trilogy? Maybe it might even be a new serialized TV series? Disney has been a bit allergic that sort of thing lately, but who knows? Maybe they might change their minds if it means Star Wars money? We’ll just have to see what happens next from here.
