Disney will start to pull shows from Hulu and Disney+ for good on May 26th. According to Deadline, the titles that are being removed include: Willow, Big Shot, Turner & Hooch, Just Beyond, Mysterious Benedict Society, The World According To Jeff Goldblum, Y: The Last Man, Dollface, The Hot Zone, Maggie, Pistol, and Little Demon.

The move, which comes with a content impairment charge of $1.5 billion to $1.8 billion, was announced during the recent Disney earnings call.

Here was the quote from Disney CFO Christine McCarthy.

Disney is ““in the process of reviewing the content on our DTC services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation” and “will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms.” According to McCarthy, Disney expects a writedown in Q3 of $1.5-$1.8 billion from removing the content. McCarthy also said “going forward we intend to produce lower volumes of content in alignment with this strategic shift.”

This is a concerning trend in the industry and Disney aren’t the only one doing it. Warner Bros. Discovery purged content that was already made or about to be released from HBO Max, AMC and Showtime have both done this as well. It’s even worse because none of these shows have had physical media releases, so they’ll be lost to time.

That sure sounds like what Warner Bros. Discovery is doing with certain content on its service HBO Max, soon to be called MAX. Disney+ lost around 4 million subscribers in the first three months of 2023. It was their second quarterly drop after closing 2022 with their first-ever decline in subscribers. They also narrowed their streaming business losses by $400 million, which is down 26%.
