James Caan was one of the most prolific actors of his or any generation. The man was a living legend. His family confirmed the news via his official Twitter account that on the evening of July 6th, he passed away.

His most famous role is Sonny Corleone in The Godfather and for good reason. Part of the reason why that movie is among the greatest of all time is his thunderous performance. He wasn’t all about gangsters and thieves though, he also had a softer side later in his career that included performances in Elf and Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs.

He is survived by his daughter Tara and sons Scott, Alexander, James, and Jacob.

Through a deep and varied career, his most famous roles showed plenty of sides to the actor. Whether it was a tear-jerker in Brian’s Song, a death by hail fire of bullets in The Godfather, or an unwitting author captured by an insane fan in Misery, Caan was always one of the best parts of films. Seeing him on the marquee meant that you’d get a baseline of a fantastic performance from him.
