With Obi-Wan Kenobi premiering last night, all eyes at Star Wars Celebration 2022 yesterday were understandably focused on the franchise’s live-action offering. Notwithstanding, there is a new era of Star Wars storytelling that is quietly making waves. For those not already familiar with The High Republic, you may want give it try. If the packed house for its panel yesterday was any indication, the golden era of the Republic is gaining traction among fans. That’s a good thing too, as there is a lot more of it coming.

The High Republic

Strangely though, the next phase of The High Republic is not picking up after the devastating events of the first. Instead, it takes yet another step back in time. Phase II opens 150 years prior to the events of the recent slate of novels, comic books, and audio dramas that comprise our introduction into the new era of Star Wars. This time we get two meet two Chancellors, Pathfinders, and a slew of new characters, aliens, and Jedi.

The High Republic steps back to move forward

The High Republic

This chapter of the Star wars saga will again present itself mostly on the written page. It is a time before the Starlight Beacon, when communications only occur via a cosmic Pony Express. Com droids ferry messages back and forth across the galaxy. There’s no doubt the lag in communication time will factor heavily in the drama of The High Republic Phase II. And rest assured – all authors, including Claudia Gray, Cavan Scott, Charles Soule and others promise plenty of drama, action and more.

If we were to predict two highlights of the upcoming second phase of The High Republic, it is these: First, a comic series “The Blade” will focus on Porter Engle, the elder, legendary Jedi we saw in Phase I. he’s described in his younger years as a “gunslinger Jedi,” shrouding the new series in exciting mystery. Soule calls it one of the most epic stories he’s ever written. There will also be a new audio drama, enticingly titled “The Battle of Jedha.”

All in all there’s a lot to look forward to in this era for years to come. For more on this and all things happening at Celebration, stay tuned here to That Hashtag Show all weekend!
