“You ever had that thing where you think you know someone, as well as you could possibly know anyone? And then, one day… you were totally wrong?”

So muses Bella Heathcote in voiceover for the new trailer for Pieces of Her. The upcoming Netflix series adapts the bestselling novel by Karin Slaughter. The story follows Andy (Heathcote) in a desperate journey across the states as she tries to unravel the mystery – and danger – of her mother’s (Toni Collette) past.

Check out the official trailer below:

Based on the trailer, the series looks to have plenty of thrills, action, and drama. And of course, the whole thing is wrapped up in a deeper question: How well do we really know the people in our lives? How can we say for sure who they were before we knew them?

And what happens when the past can’t stay a secret anymore?

The series comes from showrunner Charlotte Stoudt, who previously helmed Fosse/Verdon and House of Cards. Minkie Spiro directs.

In addition to Collette and Heathcote, Pieces of Her stars Jessica Barden, Jacob Scipio, Joe Dempsie, Aaron Jeffery, Omari Hardwick, Gil Birmingham, David Wenham, Calum Worthy, Nicholas Burton, and Terry O’Quinn.

Here’s the official synopsis from Netflix:

Based on Karin Slaughter’s New York Times bestselling novel, in a sleepy Georgia town a random act of violence sets off an unexpected chain of events for 30-year-old Andy Oliver and her mother Laura. Desperate for answers, Andy embarks on a dangerous journey across America, drawing her towards the dark, hidden heart of her family.
