Ok, so don’t get too excited. We’re not getting Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie anytime soon. But Waititi did offer a brief update on the project recently.

During an interview with Wired UK, Waititi discussed how his schedule is finally clearing up to allow him to focus on Star Wars. (Waititi has certainly been busy, between his recent cameo role in The Suicide Squad, his role in the upcoming flick Free Guy, and of course, having recently wrapped filming on Thor: Love and Thunder.)

“It’s still in the ‘EXT. SPACE’ stage,” Waititi joked, referring to scriptwriting format. “But we’ve got a story.”

So story: check! Script: in progress for Waititi’s Star Wars film. And while he didn’t offer up any details about what that story might entail, Waititi did tease that fans should expect a project that’s very him.

“I’m really excited by [the story] because it feels very me,” he added. “I tend to go down that little sincerity alleyway in my films. I like to fool the viewer into thinking ‘ha it’s this’ and then [have] them going, ‘Damn it, you made me feel something!’”

News that Waititi would direct a Star Wars film dropped during the December 2020 Disney Investor’s Meeting. LucasFilm announced an incredible ten new projects in the Star Wars universe. The film isn’t even Waititi’s first foray into the galaxy far far away. He previously directed the season 1 finale of The Mandalorian.

You can next see Waititi on screen in Free Guy opposite Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Comer. And of course, watch out for Thor: Love and Thunder in 2022.

So, what do you hope to see in Waititi’s Star Wars feature? We speculated a while back we could get Dawn of the Jedi. But really, anything is possible. Drop your ideas in the comments.
