Break out the tissues. Michael B. Jordan will lead a new romantic drama, A Journal For Jordan.

The feature—directed by none other than Denzel Washington—tells the story of a deployed soldier who keeps a journal for his infant son.

A Journal For Jordan is based on the true story of Sergeant Charles Monroe King (Jordan). As a soldier deployed to Iraq, he begins to keep a journal of love and advice for his infant son. Back at home, senior New York Times editor Dana Canedy (Chanté Adams) revisits the story of her unlikely, life-altering relationship with King and his enduring devotion to her and their child. A sweeping account of a once-in-a-lifetime love, the film is a powerful reminder of the importance of family and the all-too-human cost of war.

The emotional drama marks a change of pace for Jordan, who’s fronted intense action flicks like Without Remorse and Creed for the past several years.

“I’ve done a lot of physical roles, because that’s been my appetite. I’m 34; the last seven years has been (about) physically developing into your sweet spot,” Jordan told USA Today.

Following that physical development, Jordan said he felt ready to try focusing on a more emotional role.

“I felt safe to be able to go into this, to explore these characters, and to be vulnerable in that type of way,” Jordan explained.

Sony adapts A Journal For Jordan from the book by Dana Canedy and a screenplay by Virgil Williams. Canedy also shared her stories with the filmmaking team to point them in the right direction for the adaptation.

“The story would not be happening if it wasn’t for (the family’s) approval and signoff on everything,” said Jordan.

In addition to Jordan, the film stars Chanté Adams and Jalon Christian.

A Journal For Jordan premieres exclusively in theaters December 2021.
