The long gestating Red Sonja film has found it’s lead. Hanna John-Kamen is Red Sonja in the upcoming fantasy film. THR had the news on her casting. She previously played Ghost in Ant-Man and the Wasp and starred in the Brave New World series, as well as Ready Player One. She’s also starring in the upcoming Resident Evil: Origin reboot. Joey Soloway is directing the film, he had high praise for John-Kamen.
Hannah is a very talented actress who we’ve been following for years and she IS Red Sonja. Her range, sensibilities and strength are all qualities we have been looking for and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this journey together.
Red Sonja is a spinoff from the timeless Conan the Barbarian franchise and comics. Creators Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith made the character for Marvel in the 1970’s. She was strong, fiery, and menacing enough to go toe-to-toe with Conan. She’s has seen plenty of movie news over the past decade or so. It started with the craptastic 1985 film Red Sonja, and continued through the 2000’s and 2010’s.
Let’s hope this film gives the character the due that she deserves.
