The third film to Disney’s TRON with Jared Leto is still happening.

The latest on the upcoming TRON movie is it’s still in development. The third installment of the series promises to star Jared Leto. Earlier this year, there was an announcement John Ridley was to direct a Disney+ series for the franchise. The project ended up scrapped due to the lack of enthusiasm about TRON’s return. The scrapped title for the project was TRON: Ascension.

Sequel, Not a Reboot

However, a source close to The Disinsider confirmed a TRON sequel is still happening and Jared Leto is involved. The director for the project is still unknown, but the fact Leto is joining the franchise is exciting. And the news that this next movie will be a sequel and not a reboot means the possibility of continuing the story from TRON: Legacy. This possibly means the return of the story’s original characters such as the Flynn family.

It has been 10 years since the last movie revolving around the digital world, TRON: Legacy. And fans of the Disney franchise have been impatiently waiting for another taste of the light cycles and TRON discs.

Daft Punk’s Return?

One of the biggest questions about returning to the world of TRON is if this means the return of Daft Punk. Daft Punk scored the 2010 installment of TRON: Legacy through futuristic, high-energy electronic music that the robotic duo is known for. It has been seven years since Daft Punk released their last album, Random Access Memories, so hopping on another soundtrack would be a great return to music.

In regards to Daft Punk’s return, Disney music executive, Mitchell Leib may have spilled the beans. On an appearance on Light the Fuse podcast, Leib hinted at talks with the duo and that a TRON 3 script already has been written.

A Disney+ Exclusive?

Leib explains, “Now with Disney+, I think there’s opportunities to be creating content that we otherwise wouldn’t have been able to create, you know because we’re in the business. We’re in the big movie business, and unless it’s a big movie idea we don’t make small movies. We’re only after basically billion dollar box office hits.”

He goes on to say, “And we’ve got a great script. I mean a really phenomenal script that we’re very excited about. Whereas the timing wasn’t right to have done it years ago, I think we feel like the timing is right now, and I feel like we’ve learned a lot of lessons from that last movie.”

If this new TRON movie with Jared Leto follows through, my biggest hope is that this would be enough momentum to finally make a light cycle ride at Disneyland. The PeopleMover track in Tomorrowland has just been sitting there serving no particular purpose. The track would be perfect for a TRON ride. I know that I’m not alone on this.

What do you think? Are you excited for another TRON movie? Are you excited to see Jared Leto part of it? Let us know.
