Trailer #2 for The Mandalorian on Disney+

The second trailer for Star Wars: The Mandalorian dropped, and among all the cool shots we see, there’s one big Easter egg in there. Something J.J. Abrams said about The Rise of Skywalker is that he plans to draw on all eras of Star Wars to close out the saga. It appears The Mandalorian reaches back in the past also.

The B2 Super Battle Droid returns in The Mandalorian

Check out the trailer at 1:05. There’s a scene with what looks to be a family running for their lives from a Clone Wars-era clanker—a Separatist B2 Super Battle Droid! Two of them actually. They round the corner, wrist cannons firing right on the heels of the fleeing family.

That’s a B2 Super Battle Droid, baby!

We first saw them in Episode II: Attack of the Clones, but it would seem we’re about to see a little more of them. Supposedly they were all shut down after Vader’s execution of the Separatist leadership on Mustafar, but continuing canon has shown some were found and repurposed. Most recently, they showed up in Dr. Aphra’s adventure on Quarantine World III, where they are dispatched handily by Darth Vader, himself. Now a pair shows up in The Mandalorian.

Interestingly enough, in that same story arc, Dr. Aphra may have found the device that does in C-3P0 in Episode IX. She ventures to Quarantine World III at Vader’s behest to find the Triple Zero Protocol Personality Matrix. When installed in a standard protocol droid, it essentially erases their memory and makes them violent with torturous tendencies. Does this device become C-3P0’s fate as well?
