United States Championship Match: AJ Styles vs. Ricochet
Right off the bat, Ricochet’s ring gear was awesome. Dressed to look like Nightwing, he looked the part of the superhero between the ropes. Styles came out with Gallows and Anderson flanking him.
The action in this one was less of a spotfest and more about in-ring psychology. Ricochet’s leg is targeted by Styles fairly early on. This leads to Ricochet being limited in his athletic moveset. The announcers even comment about how Ricochet is busting out moves we haven’t seen him do in a WWE ring. Which is a nice touch.
Anytime Ricochet looked like he was going to gain the advantage in the match, Styles would target his knee again. The match breaks down when Ricochet jumps on the outside apron and Gallows and Anderson go after him. It looks like Ricochet is going to get the upper hand and jump off the top rope when Styles slaps him in the setup for the Styles Clash and nails it.
Styles picks up the pinfall victory with a Styles Clash.
Grade: B
These guys are two of the best in the world. This match could have been an energetic spotfest that showed just how great these two are. But that’s not the character that Styles is portraying at the moment. He’s a heel that doesn’t want a fair fight with Ricochet. So this is a welcome change to that, that allows Ricochet to show how gutsy he is, but Styles has the numbers advantage. It’ll be interesting to see where they go from here, but I don’t think Ricochet should get another shot at Styles so soon.
