We recently discussed which Star Wars movie is the best of them. The general consensus is that The Empire Strikes Back still reigns as number one. The debate over number two, however, is much more divided. Some fans complain about the Disney era of Star Wars. Contrarily, I think it’s produced one of the best Star Wars films ever. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story lands squarely at number two on my list. Thus, I was excited to hear about the upcoming Cassian Andor spinoff. But… Would Jyn Erso have made a better, focal character for a new series?

Ask Jyn Erso actress Felicity Jones and the answer is a resounding yes. Jones recently participated in Variety’s Actors on Actors program, interviewing Fresh Off the Boat actress Constance Wu. While the interview was supposed to be about Wu, it was Jones who made the headlines.

Can Jyn Erso Return to Star Wars?

Wu wouldn’t want to join Star Wars for fear of getting stuck in an extended contract. Jones, on the other hand, would jump at the chance to reprise her role as Jyn Erso:

“I loved playing that character so I actually, in an opposite way, I would really like to have more consistency and come back and bring Jyn back,” said Jones. “I would actually like that for a couple of years.”

We only got to see a very brief period of Jyn Erso’s life in Rogue One. The film did, however, allude to her experiences as a member of Saw Gerrera’s cadre of rebels. Many would love to see Jyn’s backstory on screen, whether it be in the theater or on Disney’s new streaming service, Disney+.

Sourcing Jyn Erso’s Backstory

Jyn Erso was the subject of Beth Revis’s 2017 novel Rebel Rising. The book chronicled Jyn’s relationship with Saw Gerrera and her experiences following her father’s kidnapping at Orson Krennic’s hands. In the book, Jyn Erso grows from a scared, eight year-old girl into the skilled and toughened rebel we see in Rogue One. There’s a plethora of source material in the novel that could easily fuel a Jyn Erso series or stand-alone, straight-to-streaming film.

In one film Jyn Erso became one of my favorite Star Wars characters. With Star Wars Rebels having ended, there is, unfortunately, little likelihood of seeing her in action again. Still, if The Mandalorian and the Cassian Andor series are successful, well…. As Jyn Erso says:

“We have hope.”
