All signs are pointing to Disney and Fox finalizing their deal within the next several weeks which means that before long, Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios will have access to hundreds of Marvel Comics characters that have been off limits to the MCU. While fans are pining for Feige to cram cameos into Avengers: Endgame, the Marvel Studios head honcho has made it clear he’s more inclined to take his time, develop a plan and make sure that the next iterations of the X-Men and Fantastic Four to appear on screen will be the best possible versions. That doesn’t mean he hasn’t been thinking about it (he’s certainly been talking more about it) and it appears that one of the first characters that might get the MCU treatment could be the Sentinel of the Spaceways himself, the Silver Surfer.

Recently director Adam McKay (Vice) made it known that helming a solo Silver Surfer project would be a dream come true. In an interview with Happy Sad Confused’s Josh Horowitz, McKay talked about the Cosmic side of Marvel Comics before zeroing in on the one time Herald of Galactus, saying, “But Silver Surfer man, that’s the one I want to do. I would do anything to do Silver Surfer, because visually that would be just be…You could do what the Wachowskis did with Speed Racer, with the Silver Surfer.

MTV News asked Feige about the idea at last Sunday’s Golden Globes and the head man certainly not only appeared open to the idea, he indicated that he and McKay had discussed the project that same night.

“I’ve not gotten a call, but I’ve seen Adam tonight and at a number of these awards and he is not only, as everybody knows, an incredibly smart guy, he is a honest to goodness fan. And, you know, he did a lot of sort of behind-the-scenes help with us on the first Ant-Man film, and have you seen Vice? Little cameo. Little Galactus cameo that we helped him get. So I look forward to speaking with him more.”

McKay was also at the award ceremony and had an upbeat response when asked about the project, saying, “ There actually has been some discussion about Silver Surfer. My agent certainly woke up. They were excited. We’re in the middle of, you know, backing Vice right now but, who knows, in a couple months it could pop up. I really am excited by that idea so we’ll see what happens.”

McKay and Feige have a fantastic working relationship already, so it’s no surprise that a conversation took place. McKay came in to do some script work on Ant-Man after the original screenwriters and director left the film. He also had conversations with the studio about potentially helming the Inhumans film that never happened and possibly taking the reigns for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. We don’t know why McKay didn’t agree to any of those projects, but perhaps he’s been waiting for the right time to pitch his passion project to Feige.

After first appearing in the pages of Fantastic Four #48 in 1966, the Silver Surfer has become a staple of Marvel Comics Cosmic events and has had several volumes of his own title over the years. While many only know of his time serving Galactus, there’s no doubt that there are enough great Surfer stories to support not only his own solo film, but perhaps a franchise. Whether he headlines a franchise or not, he could certainly become a huge part of Marvel Studios plans in 2023 and beyond.
