Nikyatu Jusu is joining up with 20th Century Films for a new film in The Fly universe. The universe they’re talking about it from David Cronenberg’s body horror classic that’s a remake of the 1958 film. She will write and direct the film and it is described as not a straightforward remake. The project comes at a time when body horror is seemingly in vogue with movies like The Substance raking in cash and accolades.
Cronenberg’s version of The Fly follows Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum), whose experiments with teleportation take a turn when his DNA gets crossed with that of a house fly. As the movie progresses, his transformation is both physical and mental which blurs the lines between a human and monstrosity. It won an Academy Award for Best Makeup and is a shining symbol of how good practical makeup and monster effects can be.
Nikyatu Jusu started her rise in fame with the release of Nanny, starring Anna Diop and Michelle Monaghan. Her next project is with Monkeypaw and Universal and looks to expand on her short film Suicide By Sunlight, which is about vampires. She’s also working on a Night of the Living Dead sequel for MGM.
Cronenberg’s film spawned a sequel in 1989 that starred Eric Stoltz.
