When and Where to Read
Spy x Family Ch. 105 made its online debut on September 15, 2024. You can read this chapter entirely for free on Shonen Jump on Viz Media. Ch. 105 will remain free for two chapter releases after it. Upon the release of the third chapter after it, Ch. 105 will go into the Shonen Jump vault. Once there, you will have to pay a subscription fee to read it and all previous chapters. Admittedly, the fee is only $2.99 per month, so it’s not that big a hit to your wallet. All the same, if you’re short on cash, then you might want to hurry up and read Ch. 105 for free before you can’t anymore.
Anime Adaptation Details
As a side note: Spy x Family now has an anime adaptation that premiered on April 9, 2022. In fact, season 2 just recently premiered on October 7, 2023, and even more recently ended on December 23, 2023. There was even an anime film spinoff called Spy x Family Code: White that premiered in Japan December 22, 2023; and will finally make its NA debut on April 19, 2024. You can watch all episodes on either Crunchyroll or Hulu. Note, though, that only Crunchyroll has any of the dubs. So if you like watching the English dub for some reason, then you have to watch the anime on Crunchyroll.
If you want to purchase tickets for that Spy x Family Code: White anime film though, then you can do so from its official website. Note though that Spy x Family Code: White is now streaming on Crunchyroll, so you don’t have to head to theaters if you don’t want to.
Spy x Family Ch. 105 / Mission 105: Plot Summary
Spy x Family Ch. 105 starts us off with Franky’s alarm clock. As you can see above: it’s a rather complex affair worthy of The Incredible Machine, complete with an attempt to behead Franky with a mechanical samurai. Thankfully, it doesn’t succeed, but he really should think about altering his Rube Goldberg machine one of these days.
Following that self-induced near-death experience, Franky then goes about his day manning his tobacco store, introducing us to his regulars. This is then followed by him babysitting Anya for the Forgers, which is something he seems to like despite complaining about it so much. The thing he does with the money from babysitting? Betting it all on horse races, which naturally, does not pay out thanks to the usual informant being captured by the SSS. At the very least, he does get a pair of movie tickets from the WISE informer working as a racetrack teller, which he uses to take a girl out on a date, hoping for that elusive relationship.
Alas, Franky then gets the news that very racetrack teller gets caught by the SSS himself, thanks to that informant squealing. Thus, Franky calls off his date in order to rescue that teller, even if it means sacrificing his potential love life. He does get a movie date(?) with the teller as a…reward(?) for that, so…good for them? They agree to never do this again, but still, it was a good deed on Franky’s part. We’ll just have to see if Tatsuya Endo rewards him for that good karma later in Spy x Family.
Spy x Family Ch. 105 / Mission 105: The Good
Spy x Family Ch. 105 continues the tradition of the best part of the manga being the story. Tatsuya Endo really has a knack for writing great stories with engaging characters. Surprisingly enough, even the light-hearted nature of this chapter still results in some surprising developments for Franky. Yes, he’s still a silly rascal. However, he turns out to be a silly rascal with morals and a high degree of loyalty to his friends. He’s willing to not only put himself at considerable risk for them, but also sacrifice his love life in the process, which is something he’s previously been shown to care very much about. The result is that this seemingly comedic chapter is actually a fascinating character study for Franky, which is a nice touch here.
Complementing that story is the ever-wonderful art. Endo’s artwork continues to bring life to the characters, especially due to his love of expressive facial expressions. The comedic expressions definitely dominate this chapter, with the notable highlight being Franky’s expression when his own alarm clock nearly beheads him.
Spy x Family Ch. 105 / Mission 105: The Bad
Alas, if you’re looking for bloody action and dark drama, then Spy x Family Ch. 105 isn’t for you. Yes, there is action with Franky attacking SSS agents with his goofy gadgets for the sake of his friend. However, it’s action that’s all played for laughs. If you want something darker, bloodier, and overall more violent, then may I suggest Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Solo Leveling, Kaiju No. 8, DDDD, and/or DAN DA DAN? Those anime should be bloody enough to satisfy any action junkie cravings.
