Star Wars has, arguably, created one of the greatest sci-fi film friendships in history with Han Solo and Chewbacca. If you doubt that, read fan reactions to the on-screen death of Han Solo and the real-life passing of Peter Mayhew. The actors AND the characters they portray are universally loved by the Star Wars fandom. Now there is an opportunity to create that winning scenario a second time with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’s Cassian and K-2SO.
In August, Marvel will release a 40-page one shot issue of Star Wars: Rogue One – Cassian and K-2SO. The issue will tell the story of how the secretive rebel operative Cassian Andor came into an unlikely partnership with sharp-tongued Imperial Security Droid K-2SO. We saw how it ended for them in Rogue One. Now we can learn how it all began. Fans will be treated to the rest of their adventures on Disney+ when their live-action series debuts in 2021.
Cassian and K-2SO: Do fans need this?
This is good news for two reasons. First, it’s more Rogue One: A Star Wars Story content from what many fans consider the best of the modern films since Disney took over. Second, the show can start right into the action of these two and not bog down fans with an origin story. One of the many complaints from comic fans about the X-Men films is all the origin stories for characters they already knew. Perhaps Disney has learned from this and will give us new stories on-screen instead of rehashing things fans might already know.
Concerning the announcement of the live-action show, Diego Luna had this to say about returning to the role of Cassian:
“Going back to the Star Wars universe is very special for me. I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey. We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this new exciting format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply.”

Who’s on the creative team of this issue?
The Cassian and K-2SO comic is written by Duane Swierczynski, a veteran comic writer since 2008. His credits include titles such as Moon Knight, Punisher, Cable, and Werewolf by Night. Interestingly, he started as a non-fiction crime novelist. Given the minor dark side of Cassian’s character, fans may get to see the seedier side of how he began.
Slinging the pencil will be artist Fernando Blanco, whose work for DC Comics includes Batman, Catwoman, Batwoman, and Midnighter and Apollo among others. See a sample of his work below:
Our new favorite droid: K-2SO
We have heard fans on multiple occasions say Alan Tudyk’s portrayal of K-2SO is a primary factor behind their love of Rogue One. Getting more of the fan-favorite smart aleck droid is never a bad thing, even if it’s only on comic pages. Here’s to hoping the team behind the comic can capture the same on-screen presence K-2 has.
