[EDITORIAL: The opinions expressed herein are those of the author only and do not necessarily reflect those of That Hashtag Show, LLC or its affiliates.] We all know by now that Disney fired Gina Carano from The Mandalorian. The main impetus for the firing was Carano’s use of social media to promote her personal views. In some cases, those included theories and conspiracies easily proven false. One particularly egregious claim was that the treatment of conservatives in the current political climate in the United States was akin to the treatment Jews faced in Nazi Germany. Now Gina Carano, with funding from Elon Musk, is suing Disney because of the firing.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Carano is suing the House of Mouse for wrongful termination and sexual discrimination. She essentially claims that they fired her because of her political activities. Likewise, she alleges, the corporation discriminated against here because they fired her and not male co-workers. (She cites politically charged social media posts of their own.) In reading the complaint, I double-down on my statements from nearly two years ago: Disney was absolutely right to fire Gina Carano.
Gina Carano sues Disney over firing
You can read the full complaint in the link above. I’ve read it. The complaint is ridiculous on so many fronts I don’t even know where to begin. For instance, her lawyers use the tweet that got her fired as purported evidence as to how Disney was allegedly suppressing her political activities. Here it is:
Let’s get something straight here – Gina Carano effectively compared how conservatives are treated online to how the Nazi government turned neighbors on Jewish neighbors in mid twentieth century Germany. Sorry, Gina, conservatives getting mean tweets about their politics is not in any way remotely close to Nazi efforts to demonize an entire people and systematically root them out and round them up for the sole purpose of MURDERING THEM IN MASS. That her lawyers have the utter audacity to quote the Auschwitz Museum to support the unquestionably false equivalency of the comparison is beyond sickening.
It’s true – in California an employer cannot fire someone for pursuing a certain political action or activity. Disney can, however, fire you for being an ignorant moron… no matter how hard you try to spin your actions. [To see how Gina Carano tells her side of the story, see HERE.]
Time will tell how this shakes out…. but let’s be honest. The likely outcome of this lawsuit will be a closed-door negotiation that leads to a confidential settlement. Part of me hopes that doesn’t happen, because I for one would love to see the theatrics of this lawsuit played out in court. It would certainly be better and more entertaining than Carano’s acting.
