Ever since the Detective Pikachu film came out back in 2019, there has been nothing but radio silence from Nintendo about the series as a whole. Indeed, the company had become notorious for its tight-lipped attitude about anything related to the Great Detective Pikachu. Fortunately, that all changed with Nintendo Direct 2023, when they suddenly dropped a trailer for Detective Pikachu Returns out of the blue. Don’t believe me? Then why not check out that new trailer for yourself below, and revel in the deep-voiced coffee-guzzling Pikachu? Yes, you read me right.

Detective Pikachu Returns: Details

Hardboiled detective Pikachu is still hilarious even after all these years.

Nintendo Direct 2023 is very proud to reveal Detective Pikachu Returns in that trailer above on YouTube. Said trailer basically shows off Pikachu’s new adventures in Ryme City with his human partner Tim Goodman. Not only that, but we see a much larger variety of Pokemon than there were in the original game for the Nintendo DS. Which is fitting, considering that Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon hadn’t even come out yet when Detective Pikachu launched in Japan on February 3, 2016.

The trailer for Detective Pikachu Returns, unfortunately, doesn’t seem to reveal much in terms of story. All we have is the mayor of Ryme City declaring a “Pokemon Friendship Week” to get people closer to their Pokemon. How does this end up being a crime for Pikachu to solve? We have no idea. All we know is that Mewtwo is involved in this somehow, and that’s it. I guess we’ll just have to find out when we finally get to play this sequel.

Unfortunately, that will still be a ways off. The end of that trailer for Detective Pikachu Returns reveals that this sequel game will make its debut on the Nintendo Switch on October 6, 2023. Fortunately, you can preorder the game on the Nintendo eShop for $49.99. Keep in mind though that it’s digital download only. We’ll have to wait a bit longer to find out when we can get the physical version. Tune back in to THS to find that out when we do.
