Spy x Family Ch. 67.2: Plot Summary

I don’t think he considered anything when he made that call.

Spy x Family Ch. 67.2 picks up where we last left off, when the ludicrously petty director of Berlint General Hospital decided to frame Loid as a spy (ironically) to the SSS. Following that call, a pair of undercover SSS agents show up, explaining to the director that their lack of uniform is to avoid attracting attention and to avoid ruining the hospital’s reputation. The director leads the agents to Loid’s office, where a brief search results in the agents finding some false evidence the director had planted in Loid’s office beforehand. With that false evidence in hand, the agents then subsequently arrest Loid. Only, not everything is as it seems.

As it turns out, the 2 “SSS agents” are Franky and Midnight in disguise. Franky had been tapping the hospital’s phone system, and had intercepted the director’s call to the SSS, posing as a SSS agent himself to receive the call. Thus, the whole arrest of Loid is a giant ruse, as we see during the on-site interrogation.

Loid and the SSS Uno Reverse Card

My, imaginary shadow Loid is a very naughty Loid indeed.

Loid and the “SSS agents” then go through a whole skit whereupon they “discover” that the director planted the fake evidence. Not only that, but they accidentally reveal that the director had committed a whole bunch of shady stuff and even some outright crimes too, including bribery, fraud, and theft of medical supplies to sell to other hospitals. The “SSS agents” then proceed to arrest the director instead. However, Loid puts on one heck of a performance, and “convinces” the “SSS agents” to release the director and forget this ever happened.

Thus, Loid returns home to his family a little tired but definitely not arrested. Loid then proceeds with his Plan C as Anya wracks her brain on the meaning of “friendship” to try and outdo Yor. Will Anya pull ahead of Yor in this game of friendship with plot-critical characters? Well, that’s what we’ll presumably find out in the next chapter of Spy x Family.

At least the director is relatively competent at planting fake evidence.

The best part of Spy x Family Ch. 67.2 is, as always, the story. Tatsuya Endo is very good at coming up with a story that perfectly balances drama with ridiculous comedy. Case in point: the page above. The seriousness of the director planting false evidence against Loid to get the SSS to arrest him is counterbalanced by the director’s childishly petty glee at the “SSS agents” discovering his carefully planted evidence. I’ve not seen someone strike that kind of perfect balance between drama and comedy since Fullmetal Alchemist. It’s why I love this manga so much.

The art of this chapter is also nothing to laugh at. On the contrary, the art perfectly complements the story. Again, case in point: the page above. The hyper-detailed and evil-looking expression the director has is perfectly counterbalanced by his childishly chibi face in his thought bubble after that panel. Facial expressions has always been one of Tatsuya Endo’s strong points, and this chapter is no exception.

Spy x Family Ch. 67.2: The Bad

The moment you thought Loid might actually be in trouble…until he isn’t.

As a longtime fan of Spy x Family, I cheerfully admit to being completely biased towards this manga. Thus, my only complaint is that we don’t actually see what kind of antics Franky gets up to with his handsome disguise afterwards. I suspect that might show up as an extra in the tankouban volume though, so my wish might be granted.
