As it turns out, the Spy x Family anime’s popularity is doing wonders for the original manga. I mean, the manga was always great, but the anime is just getting more and more people to realize that. How do I know this? Well, those 21 million sales speaks for itself.
Operation “Sell More Manga” Accomplished!
Twitter user @SHIHEILIN (as reported by Comic Book) has reported that the Spy x Family manga by Tatsuya Endo has just reached a grand total of 21 million copies sold for all volumes. This is in spite of the fact that the manga is currently sitting at only 9 volumes at the time of this writing. For a manga series to reach that many copies sold despite having only 9 volumes is beyond impressive.
For comparison, Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma by Yūto Tsukuda and Shun Saeki concluded at 36 volumes, and it only has seen 20 million copies sold. Even some pretty great manga like Assassination Classroom by Yusei Matsui only barely beats Spy x Family with 25 million copies sold, despite concluding with a grand total of 21 volumes. Honestly, if these sales numbers keep up, Tatsuya Endo might seriously end up becoming one of the great mangaka alongside names like Eiichiro Oda (One Piece) and Tite Kubo (Bleach). Who knows how high Endo’s manga about spies and fake families will climb? And all because of a great anime adaptation to boot.
Spy x Family Anime: The Best Promotion for the Manga Ever?
The Spy x Family anime adaptation premiered on Crunchyroll back on April 9, 2022. According to Comic Book, at the start of April 2022, the manga “only” had 12.5 million copies in circulation. That means in the nearly 2 months of the anime’s existence (with a grand total of 8 episodes as of this writing), the anime’s popularity resulted in an additional 8.5 million copies sold. That works out to a 68% jump in sales. All because of the anime.
It’s even more impressive when you look at the manga sales overall. The first volume of the manga launched in Japan back in July 4, 2019. That means it took 34 months for the manga to reach the aforementioned 12.5 million copies sold. That works out to an average of a “mere” ~368,000 copies sold per month. When you realize that the anime’s release resulted in that figure jumping up to nearly 4.25 million copies sold per month (a whopping 1055% increase in sales numbers per month), then you know for certain that Wit Studio and Cloverworks did a fantastic job adapting Spy x Family into an anime.
Best of all, the Spy x Family anime isn’t even remotely close to being over. The anime is planned to last 25 episodes. That’s more than enough time for the anime to further boost the manga sales to new heights. If you’re interested, then check it out on Crunchyroll.
