Well, it looks like we’re going to have to wait just a bit longer to play The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2. Or whatever Nintendo is going to call the game eventually. Fortunately, their track record suggests that we’ll have a great game when we finally get to play it.

Our Hylian Sky Vacation Delayed

I feel disappointed, yet still hopeful.

Nintendo has just released a launch timing update video for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 on YouTube. In this video, the producer of The Legend of Zelda video game series himself, Eiji Aonuma, shows up to personally apologize for the new delay in the release of the game. This long-awaited sequel to Breath of the Wild originally had a release date set for sometime this year in 2022. Now though, Aonuma is delaying the release to sometime next year in Spring 2023.

Aonuma doesn’t really get any more specific than that, but he doesn’t need to. All we need to know is that it will be at least a year before we get to see what Link gets up to in the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Fortunately, though, we do have some hints about that in the video itself.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 ~ Update Video Speculation

Whoa, Fi. You feeling okay? You don’t look so good.

For the most part, the gameplay footage in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild update video is no different from the footage they showed during that reveal trailer back during Nintendo Direct at E3 2021. However, if you look closely, you can see bits of new footage right before it cuts back to Aonuma again. The obvious thing you’ll notice is the Master Sword and its state. As you can see in the image above, it looks rather…corroded. Or perhaps corrupted might be a better word? In any case, the Master Sword has clearly seen better days. It might even be cursed now for all we know. Maybe Ganon has finally figured out a way to corrupt the Master Sword, just like how he corrupted those Guardians? Now that would be a rather interesting yet terrifying plot point to explore.

Navi? Is that you? Did you get a new lighting system?

Another thing you might notice in the video is that glowing yellow sprite that’s following Link around. There’s, unfortunately, no audio to accompany the new footage, so this will be a complete guess on my part. Usually, a glowing ball like that would indicate a fairy of some sort. However, fairies also usually have wings, which this ball doesn’t. Could it be Zelda’s spirit in sprite form? If so, it could be a case where Zelda isn’t physically present but is still the main character you can interact with and relate to. If that’s the case, then I might be able to forgive the producers for tossing Zelda into a bottomless pit in that trailer. You don’t just offer us a chance to explore the world with Zelda, and then fridge her at the start of the next game. That’s just wrong.

This is just speculation on my part though. Take it with a grain of salt until we eventually see The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2…eventually.
