Starstruck from BBC and HBOMax was one of my favorite new shows of 2021. When the series was renewed for a season 2 I was ecstatic. I fell in love with every character, as well as the on-again, off-again of Jessie and Tom.

WHAT IS STARSTRUCK?

Starstruck tells the story of a girl named Jessie who, just like the rest of us, is still figuring out life. She ends up having a drunken hookup with actor Tom Kapoor – who is basically the latest A-lister! Throughout the season, we see the two go back and forth figuring out if they are more than friends. In the end, Jessie is torn between a decision of moving back home or staying in London to see where things go.

Season 2 picks up right where we left off when Tom (Nikesh Patel) and Jessie (Rose Matafeo) are on the bus, and Jessie not getting off at her stop. During the 6 fantastic episodes, Jessie goes on an excruciating journey of self-love and self-acceptance while Tom is all in. It’s hard to see someone who doesn’t believe they deserve something good in their life. However, by the end with the help of her friends Jessie has an epiphany for the better.

Season 1 of Starstruck really focuses on Tom through Jessie’s eyes. While Season 2 really gives us a better and deeper look into who he is and where he comes from. During the Christmas episode, we get to meet Tom’s mother, father, and trash brother. This adds so much character and depth to a character that we honestly didn’t know much about. 

WHY SO SHORT?!

Every episode is laugh-out-loud funny and they fly by! My only wish is that the season was longer! 6 episodes that are barely 20 mins is not enough to satiate my need for this world Rose Matafeo has created. I’m absolutely in love with it. 

I will say since Starstruck season 2 mostly focuses on Jessie imploding her life and learning lessons we do lose my favorite supporting characters. Sarah and Kate have been shoved aside and only used to be the voice of reason here and there. If the series is renewed for a season 3, I do hope to see that balance return.
