Before I reveal the first use of Tommy’s Silver and Green Power Rangers helmet, let’s take a look at its Mighty Morphin history.
History
On August 24th, 2005 during the 27th episode of Power Rangers Dino Thunder titled, “Fighting Spirit,” Tommy’s Green Ranger helmet appeared with additional silver added.
The Silver and Green helmet didn’t show up again until the Green Ranger’s next appearance 10 years later during the 20th and final episode of Power Rangers Super Megaforce, titled, “Legendary Battle.” The helmet was met with an uproar from angry fans who wanted the original all Green helmet. Due to complaints, Nickelodeon and Saban digitally restored the Silver and Green helmet back to its original appearance.
In response, Jason David Frank and the team at Bat In The Sun retconned Tommy’s Silver and Green helmet by making it a power-up mode in their Superhero Beatdown, which pitted the Green Ranger against Ryu. Bat In The Sun used the Silver and Green power-up mode again when they reunited with Jason David Frank for their film Power Rangers Legacy Wars: Street Fighter Showdown. The film supplied the background story for the Power Rangers Legacy Wars game, which also used both the original Green Ranger and the power-up mode.
First Appearance
While reading BOOM! Studio’s remasted Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Archive Vol. 1, I came across what appears to be the first use of the Silver and Green helmet. Towards the end of issue 2, the Green Ranger appears with his helmet having the silver coloring. The Archive is remastered but not recolored. The silver on the helmet is how it originally appeared back in 1995. We wouldn’t see this version of the helmet again until 2004, but it has made a lasting impression.
Issue 2 of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was released from Hamilton Comics in 1995 and is available now from BOOM! Studios as a collected edition.
