First things first… MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD for WandaVision episode 5, “On a Very Special Episode.” If you haven’t watched it (and you’ve managed not to spoil it for yourself so far) click away now!
Ok, all good? Let’s get into it.
If you’ve seen WandaVision episode 5 – or read about it – you know the episode ended with the return of someone very important to Wanda: her brother Pietro, aka Quicksilver.
But as unexpected as that may be (seeing as Quicksilver died so the Avengers could stop Ultron), the presence of Pietro wasn’t the only surprise. Because WandaVision didn’t bring back Aaron Taylor-Johnson, the Pietro starring opposite Elizabeth Olsen in The Avengers flicks. Nope, they brought in Evan Peters – Quicksilver in the X-Men franchise.
WandaVision showrunner Jac Schaeffer sat down with Marvel.com to explain this surprising appearance.
“We loved the idea of [bringing him back],” Schaeffer said. “And then we were like, how in the world are we going to make this make logical sense? Like, how do we justify this? Because that’s the thing, you can hatch a million great ideas, but to make them land, to make them be grounded, to make them feel organic to the larger story.”
Ultimately, Peters’ appearance as Pietro combined two ideas: the desire to bring back Wanda’s brother, and the sitcom trope that helped the reunion play out on screen.
“We thought like, how do we give him this entrance, and then enjoy that, and then make it crazy? And we had long had the idea of the trope of the brother, or the relative, or whoever comes to town and like, stirs things up with the family — that sitcom trope,” said Schaeffer.
Peters himself was more than willing to get on board.
“Evan was always up for it — like, always, always, always. He is a comic book fan, and a Marvel fan. He is always up for the absolute weirdest option. And he’s a pleasure — truly a pleasure to work with,” said Schaeffer.
What Does It Mean For WandaVision?
Undoubtedly as WandaVision continues to ramp up towards its finale, we’ll see even more twists and surprises.
“This show is such a mind scramble, and because it’s working on so many levels, and there’s so many notions of what’s real and what’s not,” said Schaeffer. “We just thought it would be the biggest thrill to bring Evan over to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
From a fandom perspective, Peters’ appearance also has fans excited for what’s to come. Thanks to Disney’s purchase of Fox, the MCU can finally interact with X-Men again. Hopefully, this means even more crossovers in the future.
So, what did you think of Peters’ appearance as Pietro? What other twists are you predicting for WandaVision? Let us know in the comments.
