Season 2 of The Mandalorian has certainly given us some amazing moments in Star Wars. For many fans, one of the best aspects of the show’s sophomore season was the reintroduction of older characters back into Star Wars lore. First, of course, we saw Ahsoka Tano make her live-action debut. Fans of the original trilogy reveled in the long-awaited return of everyone’s favorite bounty hunter Boba Fett…. And you could almost hear the collective squeal of joy upon seeing Mark Hamill return as Luke Skywalker for the season finale. But the show also gave us some great Season 2 background characters, usually in comic relief. Here are a few of our favorites.
Mandalorian Season 2 background characters: Cookie Kid
In Chapter 12, “The Siege,” Din Djarin and the yet-to-be-named Child returned to Nevarro for repairs to the Razor Crest (God rest its mechanical soul). While there, Sidequestalorian leaves Grogu in school to help Greef Carga and Cara Dune eradicate the remainder of the Imperial remnants on the planet. A young boy snacks on some macarons next to Grogu, who asks the boy to share. When he doesn’t, Grogu (quite rudely, if you ask us) Force-snatches the Nevarro nummies away. The look on the kid’s face is priceless, making him one of our favorite Season 2 background characters.
Hungry Shore Trooper
Things go awry early when Djarin and Mayfeld venture to Morak to gain access to Imperial resources to find Moff Gideon. Before they can escape, they’re coerced into having a drink with an Imperial officer. Mayfeld quickly shows his disdain for the Empire and the reasons he left. He punctuates his emotion with a blaster bolt to the officer’s chest while a Shore Trooper looks on. Granted, it’s difficult to show expression with a helmet on. To do so as one of the Season 2 background characters in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it scene? This Shore Trooper pulled it off. We can’t imagine that anyone couldn’t easily see the “WTF” look on the Trooper’s “face” when Mayfeld fired. “I… just wanted to enjoy my lunch….”
Sassy, sweater-ed Mon Calamari
In “The Heiress” Din Djarin goes in search of other Mandalorians on the planet of Trask. The Razor Crest is in bad shape and makes a less than stellar landing. The ship teeters over into the water while the Mon Calamari harbor master looks on in his J.C. Penny’s sweater. Be honest, if you didn’t think of this guy the moment you saw the Mon Cal with his hands on his hips, do you even Internet?
Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have been masterful with their attention to detail in The Mandalorian. The Season 2 background characters, while generally not integral to the story, certainly fall into that category. What were some of your favorites?
(Oops! We almost forgot to T-Shirt guy. But… since he’s already been purged from the archives, he only gets an honorable mention.)
